The new Audi A1 (2019 onwards) has had a superior upgrade from the earlier shape with features such as; LED headlights, 15” Alloys, Lane Departure Warning and Hill-Hold Assist. So, what does this all mean when it comes to towing? When you have dedicated electrics fitted with your towbar, the vehicle knows it is towing, allowing all these functions to be active.

When you are towing a caravan up a hill and need to stop, the Hill-Hold assist will kick in; it automatically holds your position when stationary on slopes and lets you drive off again with ease.

The lane departure warning also helps whilst towing as it alerts the driver if you unintentionally depart from the lane by sending gentle pulses to the steering wheel, helping when towing a caravan, trailer or even cycle carrier. This vehicle also has a driver-assist – Audi Pre-sense Front. If an imminent collision is detected, the system warns the driver and may initiate emergency braking. Again, if you have the dedicated electrics fitted, then the vehicle cleverly knows the vehicles may be longer than the norm as your towing.

On a Swan Neck towbar, the towball is part of the neck of the towbar.

A swan neck towbar can look tidier on the vehicle because it is more compact and is less likely to set any reverse parking sensors off. We can not guarantee this as it is dependant on the bumper shape and location of the parking sensors. We would recommend the Detachable Swan Neck Towbar if your vehicle has parking sensors.

The flangeball towbar is a commonly used type of towbar in this country.

On this type of towbar, the towball is bolted on to a faceplate on the tow bar, this allows accessories such as bumper guards and cycle carriers to be bolted behind the towball.

The Audi A1 has Dynamic Suspension, which gives impeccable driving dynamics with excellent ride comfort and a towing nose weight of approx. 85kg, meaning you can tow most things; however, we always recommend you check your VIN Plate to ensure you’re towing within the guidelines. The VIN Plate is usually located on the Driver’s doorpost.

Another feature of the Audi A1 is its large 335-litre boot. This is the perfect size to add your belongings for a trip away or even one of our Thule Cycle Carriers. All our Thule Cycle Carriers fold up. They will fit perfectly in your boot if you don’t want to tow it or already towing something else for your journey.

What’s the Towing Capacity for the Audi A1?

The towing capacity on the Audi A1 does vary in the style you choose. There are a few variants; Technik, Sport, S-line, Black Edition and Vorsprung. They will all have different towing capacities, so you will need to look at the VIN plate on that particular vehicle. On average, the maximum towing capacity for the Audi A1 is 1200kg; however, to work out how much you can tow, look at our VIN Plate advice here.

Which Towbar is best for my vehicle?

We have both fixed and detachable options available. We highly recommend the detachable swan neck towbar as it can be removed when not towing to avoid interfering with the parking sensors. We can not guarantee the fixed towbars won’t set the parking sensors off when you reverse.

Will it need a bumper cut?

Unfortunately, this car will need a bumper cut. The cut will be small and under the vehicle, so it will not be visible. The towbar engineer will remove the bumper, cut it to shape as per the fitting instructions. They will also remove the crash beam as the Towbar replaces it. We recommend you keep the crash beam in case you want to remove the Towbar later as the crash beam will need to be refitted.

How do I book a Towbar Fitment?

We know our customers lead busy lives, which is why our engineers will come to your home or your place of work. Our Towbar fitting service can take as little as one hour and up to four hours, depending on your vehicle.
