Towbar Mounted Cycle Carriers
Towbar Mounted Cycle Carriers are a safe and secure way of carrying up to 5 cycles on the back of your car. They are much stronger and more secure than carriers that strap to the tailgate of your car, any risk of damage to your car is virtually eliminated.A towbar mounted cycle carrier also eliminates you lifting a heavy cycle on to a roof-mounted carrier, especially if you own an Electric Bike and a SUV! There are two types of Towbar Bike Racks available; stand-on carriers and hang-on carriers. Both connect to the towball and allow up to 5 cycles to be carried. We exclusively stock Thule Cycle Carriers for all types of bikes; Electric bikes, Mountain bikes, Road bikes, Children's bikes and Fat-Wheel bikes.
There are advantages to a towbar bike rack. The first is that it leaves room on the roof of the car for more cargo, such as additional bikes or, if you’re heading off on holiday, additional storage via a roofbox. Most bike racks we stock tilt so that you can have full access to the boot, without having to remove the bikes; a really handy feature in case you need to access the boot.
Other advantages over carrying bikes on the roof include less drag through the air, and therefore reduced impact on fuel economy, and convenience in terms of putting the bikes on and taking them off; you don’t have to lift them so high. We also have cycle ramps if you need which helps rolling the cycle onto the carrier on the towbar.
Some people are concerned of the safety of the cycle carriers and their cycles "falling off" whilst towing, however all cycle carriers we stock are tested to ensure safety and stop your worries of checking the cycles are still in tow and therefore able to continue with your journey.
What cycle carrier is best for you?
You can choose between a Hang on Carriers or Stand on Carriers.
'Hang On' Cycle Carriers support bikes from the top, usually by hooking through the frame.
The main advantage of this type of carrier is that when they are used with a flangeball type towbar the towball is left free so that you can still tow at the same time. However, you do need to make sure that there is enough clearance between the bikes and what you are towing.
They are also generally cheaper, and more compact for storage than the 'Stand On' type carriers. The downside is that they are not as secure as 'Stand On Carriers'.
'Stand On' Cycle Carriers support bikes from below, they are the most secure way to carry bikes on your car.
The advantage of this type of carrier is that the bikes are securely support from below by the wheels.
The bikes are secured to the rack so that they can not move around so they won't damage your car. The downside is that they are more complex, and therefore more expensive than 'Hang On' carriers.
They are also heavier and larger, so they are more awkward to store when not in use.
