What's my Towing Capacity?
The Audi A3 has an average towing capacity of between 1,500KG to 1800KG. This capacity would allow the driver to tow anything from a cycle carrier to a small caravan. It is extremely important to be aware of the weight of what you are wanting to tow as overloading the towbar can result in damage to the vehicle or the towbar. The VIN plate provides an accurate towing capacity for individual cars and can be found under the bonnet or on the passenger door sill.
Which Towbar is best for my Audi A3?
There are three styles of towbars available for the Audi A3 Sportback; the fixed swan neck towbar, the fixed flange towbar and the detachable swan neck towbar. All three towbars offer different advantages and rely on driver preference when deciding which is best for your Audi A3.
The fixed flange towbar is a permanent style of towbar that cannot be removed from the chassis, the chunky style of towbar is also the only style of towbar that is equipped with a plate that allows for towing accessories. The fixed flange towbar uses the plate to attach towing accessories like cycle carriers whilst leaving the towball free to hitch up at the same time. The fixed flange towbar is compatible with all styles of cycle carriers, trailers and caravans, however, it would require an ALKO towball if you are towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser.
The fixed swan neck towbar is another style of permanent towbars, however, due to its thin design this style of towbar is popular among drivers who Audi A3 is fitted with rear parking sensors. The swan neck towbar allows are larger clearance area for reverse sensors making it less likely to cause a disturbance to the sensors when the vehicle is put in reverse. The fixed swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on cycle carriers, trailers and caravans. The fixed swan neck is also ALKO compatible and therefore will be able to hitch up to an ALKO stabiliser with ease and without the requirement of an ALKO towball.
The detachable swan neck is the only style of removable towbar we offer, the towbar neck can easily be removed using a simple twist and push method. Once the neck has been removed the remainder of the towbar housing is tucked away and the electric socket will flip up underneath the bumper, therefore leaving the Audi A3 in its pre-towbar state. The detachable towbar is also popular with drivers with rear parking sensors on their Audi A3 as once the towbar neck has been removed the sensors can work as they did pre-towbar. The detachable swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on cycle carriers, trailers and caravans, like the fixed swan neck towbar the detachable swan neck towbar is also ALKO compatible.
Will it need a bumper cut?
The Audi A3 requires a non-visible bumper to be made to the undertray of the vehicle when installing a towbar. The modification made will be small and neat and only visible when looking underneath the chassis. If your Audi has been modified or is not fitted with the standard bumper, a larger incision may be made, however, our informative towbar engineer will discuss any changes that will be made before the installation commences. If you have any questions about the fitment please contact our sales team.
