More about the Mercedes CLA
Like most new vehicles Mercedes has really ramped up the technology on the CLA, making the whole driving experience better than ever before. This is not something to be compromised when towing, so we automatically fit the vehicle specific wiring, as this not only protects your vehicle manufacturer's warranty, but it also enables all these new towing features to make sure you are not compromised when your caravan is connected.
Wondering what towing features are enabled with the vehicle specific wiring? Well, they come in their plenty, from active lane assist to multibeam LED lights. All these changes sound relatively simple but give the driver peace of mind that their safety is well looked after when driving their CLA.
The new model of CLA is jam packed with high level safety features, one that is new to the market is the Driver Attention Monitoring System, this innovative piece of kit, monitors driving and warns drivers when they are lacking in attention.
This safety feature also looks at when the driver is alert and makes subtle steering adjustments to encourage a more safety conscious path. This type of technology will make those caravanning commutes much safer, especially when taking the whole family on a staycation.
What’s the Mercedes CLA's Towing Capacity?
Although the CLA might not be your standout choice for towing, it has been rated to a good standard the diesel models can haul a 1,500KG braked trailer which is enough for a medium-sized caravan. The Approximate nose weight for this vehicle is 100KG, this generous weight allows you to have flexibility in your towing desires.
The different variants of the CLA all have different ranges of towing weights, making it paramount that you reference your vin plate on your own vehicle to be certain you have enough weight to be able to fulfil your towing requirements. If you are unsure of how to work this out check out our VIN plate advice page.
Which Towbar is best for my CLA?
The range of towbars for the Mercedes CLA is vast, meaning we can cater to your towing needs with a variety of options. As standard with most vehicles we would always advise opting for a detachable towbar. The detachable towbar keeps in line with the vehicle's aesthetics, you can remove the towbar when you have finished towing, as well as protecting your parking sensors by appearing almost invisible once the towbar neck has been removed. However, we do also offer both fixed variants of the towbar for those who would rather keep their towbar on all the time.
If you are unsure on which towbar is best suited to your needs, contact our technical team who will help you with your decision.
Will my CLA need a bumper cut?
Due to the bumper style on the different models of the CLA a bumper cut will be made to allow the fitment of the towbar. Our towbar fitters are extremely proud of their work and will always make the cut as neat as possible to keep the vehicle looking like the manufacturer intended. Again, as there are so many variants, and different bumper styles on the CLA it is hard to give just one dimension of the bumper cut, however it is approximately 275mm x100mm.
If you need any further information on the bumper cut required for your vehicle, contact our sales team who will advise you.
Which Electric Socket for my Mercedes CLA?
There are 3 electric socket options used in the UK; Single 7 Pin electrics (12N), Twin 7 Pin electrics (12N & 12S), and 13 Pin electrics.
The 7 Pin option provides power from the Towbar to the lights on a trailer or caravan. If you're only going to be towing a trailer this is all you need. You can tow a caravan using only single electrics, but the interior functions of the caravan, such as the fridge, wouldn't have power to them. You will need an adaptor if your caravan has 13 pin electrics.
13 Pin Electrics have been standard in most other European countries for some time. This is replacing the 2 separate sockets (Twin) currently used in the UK. The 13-pin socket is essentially the two 7 pin sockets merged in to one. All caravans manufactured in the UK from 2008 are fitted with an ISO 13 pin connector as standard. This system uses one socket with 13 pins inside, instead of the traditional two separate 7 pin sockets.
