Summer is on its way, which means fairer weather (in theory), lighter nights and more time for outdoor activities. It’s time to pull your bikes out of the back of the garage and dust the cobwebs off, ready to hit the open road.
Although cycling is a perfect past-time, there is always an element of danger and vulnerability when riding your bike on the road.
Cycling safety shouldn’t be ignored or taken lightly; all necessary measures must be taken to ensure that you are safe on the road.
It’s best to avoid any clothes that are at risk of becoming tangled in the mechanism of the bicycle. Light, or better still, fluorescent clothing, can help other road users see you clearly in poor light. Pair these with reflecting accessories to make sure that you aren’t missed. A helmet that conforms to current regulations is also a must-have in your equipment bag; evidence suggests that a correctly fitted helmet will reduce your risk of sustaining a head injury.
When cycling at night, your bicycle must have white front and red rear lights illuminated. It also must be fitted with a rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors.
You must not cycle on a pedestrianised pavement but utilise the cycle lanes when they are provided on busy carriageways. When cycling in places where sharing with pedestrians or horses, slow down when necessary and make your presence aware by ringing your bell (another piece of equipment you should make sure you have).
