Caravan Cuisine: Cooking and Dining on the Road

Starting to think ahead to the 2024 caravanning season, there's a lot to plan ahead of your trip, including meals. Being somewhat limited on space, it pays to be organised when planning what's set to be on the menu ahead of hitting the road.

With that in mind, here are some of our go-to, easy caravan meals...

Comforting and quick breakfasts

Porridge is a great option. A family favourite, it's easy to make thanks to the minimal prep involved. Not only that, this failsafe breakfast is healthy and filling, so you'll be set for a morning of adventures! Prefer to prep ahead? Overnight oats are the answer. Simply pop some oats into an empty jar, add your favourite fruit (frozen or fresh mixed berries work well), then top with milk or Greek yoghurt and a dash of honey or lemon and pop into the fridge overnight. They're ready to enjoy when you wake up.

Lunches to fuel your adventures

When it comes to those midday meals, you can't go wrong with the winning combination of a sandwich, crisps and fruit! Alternatively, and to boost your five-a-day, why not prep some nutritious salads? Both filling and enjoyable, we recommend preparing a bed of rocket with roasted sweet potatoes, and grilled chickpeas and finishing with a dash of olive oil and a sprinkle of pine nuts. Delicious!

Quick and delicious dinners

Cooking in a caravan can be something of a challenge. So, when it comes to serving something that's both delicious and filling, we'd recommend planning to enjoy a hearty bowl of pre-prepared soup, pasta or chilli.

Our personal favourite, spaghetti bolognese, is speedy to prepare and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Top with plenty of cheese and a side of warm bread.

Memorable meals in the great outdoors

If the sun does happen to make an appearance (here's hoping!), it's the perfect opportunity for a BBQ. Whether that's a breakfast sausage sandwich or a satisfying snack (hello, S'Mores!), there's no end of choice.

And, if a BBQ dinner is on the menu, why not plan ahead and marinate meat whilst you're out for the day so it's ready to put on come mealtime?

Snacks for on-the-go

Speaking of snacks, when it comes to refuelling, we recommend packing a good variety! The likes of fruit, nuts and yoghurt are family-friendly, healthy choices that will take up minimal space in your cupboard and fridge.

And, if you liken yourself more to Mary Berry than Jamie Oliver, why not bake something in advance of your trip? A generous slice of cake and a cup of tea are the perfect combination after a busy day of exploring.

Top tips for cooking and dining on the road

Planning: We'd recommend prepping any meals in advance of your trip so you can make the most of your time with family and friends

Storage: Ensure your cupboards are equipped with plenty of storage container options for lunches on the go (and the likes of overnight oats!)

Spring clean: Give your fridge and cupboards a tidy ahead of your break

Seating options: Lastly, be sure to pack enough camping chairs and a table for outdoor dining. Don't forget to light a citronella candle to keep the bugs away!

Before getting to work on those budget-friendly meals, be sure to double-check your gear and setup.
