Capacities of a Kia EV

There is a lot of speculation in the automotive industry about the towing capabilities of Electric Vehicles. Kia are at the forefront of the EV revolution following the manufacture of the Kia e-Niro and more recently the e-Soul.

We have completed a number of fitments to both models from Kia, and thought it was about time some of the inaccurate speculations are corrected.

Not enough miles in the ‘tank’: The Kia Soul EV has a range of more than 280 miles - which is the equivalent of driving from London to Newcastle.

There’s nowhere to charge: Most vehicle charging is done at home or at work, so the majority of drivers wake up or leave work without having to think about charging on the road. However, If you do need to charge on the road, there are more than 30,000 public charge points in the UK.

They take too long to charge: It’s very rare that you need to charge an electric car from completely empty - the majority of the time you're just topping up from the last charge. However, if you did want to charge from 0%, a standard 7kW home or workplace charger will charge a Kia Soul to full battery in 10 hours. If you're on the road, a 100kW rapid charger will give you 80% charge in just 45 minutes.

Kia E-Soul EV (Electric Vehicle)The Battery Power runs out: The battery packs in the Kia e-Niro and e-Soul are covered by Kia's 7 year warranty. Modern Lithium-ion Polymer batteries are more robust than originally thought - a Soul EV that's almost three years old lose just over 1% of its total battery capacity, so nothing to worry about.

They’re too expensive: Electric cars usually have a slightly higher RRP price, but this is offset by the plug-in car grant and reduced running costs. EVs have lower Service, Maintenance and Repair costs, and cost less to Fuel too, making them cheaper than both Petrol and Diesel vehicles.

They don’t have a Towing Capacity: You may think that your Electric Vehicle isn't able to tow, however this isn't true. As long as you have checked the VIN plate on your vehicle and it shows a valid capacity, there is no reason why you cannot have a Towbar installed. It is worth noting though that some vehicles are limited to what they can tow, so always check with the dealership if you are purchasing a vehicle for a specific towing requirement.
