Aftercare Advice for your Towbar

21 November 2022

Following the installation of the Towbar to your vehicle, it is important to check it regularly for any signs of damage, corrosion, or fractures on the ball itself as these may compromise the reliability of the hitch.

As well as checking the tow ball, make sure you also visually assess the mounting point to ensure that the Towbar is secure, including the fixings such as nuts and bolts.

The checks you complete may vary slightly as there are different types of Towbars available: a Fixed Swan Neck or Fixed Flange Towbar, and a Detachable Swan Neck Towbar.

It is extremely unlikely that your Towbar will ever need further attention, however by following these simple steps you are protecting the longevity of your Towbar.

As your Towbar is open to the elements, it isn’t unusual for the tow ball to become rusty. This is because Towbars are made from incredibly strong metals such as steel, and unfortunately steel is susceptible to rust.

As well as rust, abrasion from dirt and grit on the road can slowly wear down the coating of the towbar and increase the speed at which it rusts. Should the rust become extreme, it can become detrimental to the Towbar and a serious safety concern.

To prevent further issues, when you notice the rust appearing, you can remove any flakes using either sandpaper or a wire brush. Following this, apply a primer to the steel to protect the bar from further rusting.

As well as cleaning off rust, you should also clean your Towbar to ensure that the layers of grease are not attracting unwanted grit or dirt, which will eventually result in abrasions. To do this, you can use a simple white spirit or brake cleaner.

Removing the paint from the Tow Ball

If you are intending on towing a caravan, then you will be required to remove the paint on the tow ball. This is because most hitches are fitted with friction pads which can become contaminated with the paint. As a result of this, you may find that the bar becomes stuck on the hitch and very difficult to manoeuvre.

Your vehicle MOT

As part of your MOT, your Towbar will be inspected as standard. This consists of a visual assessment which checks the corrosion or damage on the Towbar, highlighting any wear and tear on the tow ball as well as inspecting the nuts, bolts, and fixings. As well as a visual check, they will also ensure that the Towbar is mounted securely to your vehicle.
