Towing a Trailer Abroad? New EU Rules You Need to Know (Effective August 2025)
If you're planning to tow a caravan, trailer, or trailer tent across Europe, there's an important new rule you need to be aware of.
As of August 26, 2025, all UK-registered trailers with a gross weight over 750kg must have:
- Their own registration certificate
- A separate number plate
- And the certificate must be carried when travelling abroad
This requirement applies to all trailers, including those used for personal or non-commercial trips — a major update from previous rules.
What You Need to Do Before Towing in the EU
To stay compliant with the new regulations, here’s what every UK trailer owner must do:
- Register Your Trailer
Register your trailer with the DVLA via the GOV.UK website. This applies to trailers over 750kg being used outside the UK.

Costs Involved
- £26 – Initial trailer registration
- £21 – New certificate for a change of keeper
- £10 – Replacement certificate if lost
- Get a Separate Registration Plate
Your trailer will need its own number plate, separate from your vehicle’s. It must be clearly displayed when travelling abroad.
- Carry Your Registration Certificate
Always bring the trailer’s registration certificate with you. You may be asked to show it at borders or during roadside checks in the EU.
Are There Any Exceptions?
Yes — but only a few. You do not need to register your trailer if:
- You’re travelling within the UK
- Your destination is Ireland, Spain, Cyprus, or Malta
However, take note: if your journey to Spain, Cyprus, or Malta involves travelling through other European countries, registration will still be required for those parts of the journey.
Why Has This Changed?
The rule change is part of the UK's post-Brexit arrangements. Previously, non-commercial trailers from the UK were exempt from these EU regulations. Now, they’re treated the same as commercial trailers and must meet the same requirements when used in most EU countries.
Where Registration is Required
If you plan to drive through or visit any of the following countries with a trailer over 750kg, you must register it:
Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (if driving through), Sweden, Switzerland, and many more.
