What's my Towing Capacity?

The Volkswagen Touran has an estimated towing capacity of around 1,500KG, this capacity will enable the driver to tow cycle carriers, trailers and up to a medium-sized caravan. When deciding on what to tow it is extremely important to be aware of the weight of the attachment, overloading your towbar can lead to damage to the vehicle or the towbar becoming unhitched and causing a road traffic accident. Which Towbar is best for my Volkswagen Touran?

There are three different towbars available for the Volkswagen Touran, the fixed flange towbar, the fixed swan neck towbar, and the detachable swan neck towbar.

The fixed flange towbar is a permanent towbar that is fixed to the chassis of the vehicle and is the only style of towbar that is fitted with a plate on the rear of the towbar. The fixed flange towbar is the only style of towbar that can use bolt-on accessories including bolt-on cycle carriers and bumper protector plates, the fixed flange towbar can use the rear plate to bolt on accessories whilst leaving the tow ball free to tow. The fixed flange towbar is compatible with all styles of cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans however if you are towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser, an ALKO tow ball would need to be fitted before hitching up.

The fixed swan neck towbar is another style of permanent towbar; however, the fixed swan neck towbar is much thinner in comparison to the fixed flange towbar. The fixed swan neck is a popular towbar with drivers who have rear parking sensors fitted to their Volkswagen Touran as the design of the towbar allows for a larger clearance between where the towbar sits and where the parking sensors are fitted. The fixed swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. It is also ALKO compatible meaning it doesn’t require an ALKO tow ball when towing a caravan fitted with an ALKO stabiliser.

The detachable swan neck towbar is the only removable style of towbar we offer for the Volkswagen Touran, the towbar neck easily detaches from its housing using a simple twist and push method. Once the towbar neck has been removed the towbar electrics will flip up underneath the vehicle's bumper allowing the Touran to return to its pre-towbar state. The detachable swan neck is compatible with all clamp-on cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. It is also ALKO Compatible, so no ALKO tow ball is required when towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser.

Will it need a bumper cut?

When fitting any of the three towbars to the Volkswagen Touran the bumper will be removed, however, this will be refitted upon completion of the fitment. There are no bumper modifications needed on any of the towbars, however, if your Touran has been altered or is not fitted with the standard bumper this may require a bumper cut to be made. Our knowledgeable towbar engineers will begin the installation by discussing any modifications required during the fitment and by answering any questions you may have about the fitment.
