More about the Toyota Proace
Is the Toyota Proace Approved to Tow?
Yes — the Proace is approved for towing across diesel and electric versions, and all our towbars are manufactured and fitted to full European standards, including 94/20/EC type approval. A towbar isn't fitted as standard, so if yours doesn't already have one, we can supply and fit a vehicle-specific option. As with any van, always check the exact rating on your VIN plate, as this varies significantly between diesel, electric, and the larger Proace Max.
What Can the Toyota Proace Tow?
The diesel Proace is a genuinely capable van for towing, while the standard electric version is more limited. It's well suited to:
- Caravans and touring trailers (diesel, within rated limits)
- Plant trailers and equipment trailers
- Box trailers and utility trailers
- Horse boxes (diesel, within rated limits)
- Towbar-mounted bike racks
Toyota Proace Towing Capacity
Exact figures depend heavily on your specific engine, body length, and the details on your VIN plate, but approximate braked towing weights are:
- Diesel: approx 2,500 kg
- Electric (standard Proace): approx 1,000 kg
- Electric (larger Proace Max): approx 2,400 kg
- Unbraked trailer: approx 750 kg
- Payload: up to approx 1,400 kg
Because towing capacity varies so much across the range — particularly between the standard electric Proace and the larger Proace Max electric — it's especially important to confirm the exact rated capacity for your specific van before towing. As with any van, payload and towing capacity also interact, so check the exact combination if you're carrying a load as well as towing.
Which Towbar Type Is Right for My Proace?
For a commercial van like the Proace, we recommend a fixed flange towbar as standard. It's the most robust option, built for repeated heavy-duty use, and compatible with a wide range of trailer couplings and load carriers. Detachable options are available on request but are less commonly specified for working vans.
Electrics for Your Toyota Proace Towbar
We fit a dedicated wiring kit matched to your Proace's electrical system, whether that's a standard 7-pin setup for basic trailer lighting or a 13-pin kit if your trailer needs additional power for caravan extras or auxiliary equipment.
