Flange or Swan Neck: Which Towbar Suits My Clubman?
The right shape depends on what you're planning to attach.
A flange towbar has a flat mounting plate with the tow ball bolted on separately. Because the ball can be removed from the plate, this is the most versatile option — almost all towbar-mounted bike racks are designed to clamp onto a flange plate, so you can switch between towing and carrying bikes easily. It's also generally the more affordable choice.
A swan neck towbar is a single moulded piece, with the neck flowing straight into the ball and no separate plate. It has a neater, more streamlined look, and its narrower profile makes it less likely to trigger the Clubman's rear parking sensors. The trade-off is compatibility: most bolt-on bike racks aren't designed to work with a swan neck, since there's no flat plate to clamp onto. A swan-to-flange adaptor is available if you want both the neater look and bike rack compatibility, though it adds cost and you can't tow while it's fitted.
As a rough guide: if carrying bikes is a regular part of why you want a towbar, flange is usually the more practical choice. If you're mainly towing a caravan or trailer and want a neater finish, or want to avoid triggering the Clubman's parking sensors day to day, swan neck tends to work better — ideally in detachable form for the best of both.
Electrics for Your MINI Clubman Towbar
We fit a dedicated, vehicle-specific wiring loom — not a universal bypass relay — so your towbar electrics integrate correctly with the Clubman's onboard safety and lighting systems. A 13-pin electrics kit is recommended for towing a caravan, giving you power for indicators, brake lights, fog lights, reversing lights, and caravan extras like fridges and reversing cameras. A 7-pin option is also available if you only need basic trailer or bike rack lighting.
