More about the Mercedes M-Class
The first thing most notice about the Mercedes M-Class is the sheer size of the exterior, so needless to say, space is no issue on the interior either. The boot alone can swallow a generous 690-litres of luggage and a humongous 2010 litres with the rear seats folded down.
The M-Class is powerful enough to make towing a breeze, hauling loads up to 3,500kg without struggle. The optional Driving Assistance package offers a selection of electronic driving systems, including Distronic Plus, which, put simply is cruise control with the added safety feature of maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front, Active Lane-Keeping Assist, which will warn the driver if they veer out of their motorway lane and can even correct the steering for you and Active Blind-Spot Assist, particularly helpful when towing as this system will tell the driver when there is something close behind that could be missed in the drivers blind-spot. All of these extra features combined, ensure the driver remains confident whilst towing and can enjoy their journey ahead.
What's my Towing Capacity?
The Mercedes M-Class has a very generous towing capacity of up to 3,500kg which is the highest available and gives the driver many options when deciding what to tow, from loading up a trailer or towing the family caravan. Due to the range of models available, it would always be recommended that you refer to your vehicle’s VIN plate to get your specific vehicle’s towing capacity; this is usually located either in the passenger door sill or under the bonnet.
Which Towbar is best for my Mercedes M-Class?
There is a range of towbars available for fitment to the Mercedes M-Class, including the detachable swan neck and the fixed flange. All towbars are great for towing in general and compatible with clamp-on style cycle carriers, caravans and trailers, but each with its own strengths and capabilities.
The Detachable Swan Neck towbar can be removed when not being used to tow. Therefore, if your vehicle has parking sensors, we would always recommend the Detachable Swan Neck as this removes any chance of the towbar interfering with the sensors when not being used to tow. This swan neck style towbar is ALKO compatible, therefore an additional ALKO towball would not be necessary when towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser.
If you would prefer the towbar to remain fixed to your vehicle permanently, the Fixed Flange towbar is the choice for your Mercedes M-Class, the flange style of towbar is fitted with a plate that allows for all bolt-on accessories, however, the Flange towball is not ALKO compatible an ALKO towball would need to be added in order to tow a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser.
Will it need a bumper cut?
When installing any of the available towbars to the Mercedes M-Class, the bumper will need to be removed during fitment and a small cut made to the bumper, however, this would not be visible once the bumper is refitted to the vehicle on completion of the towbar installation as it is to the underside of the bumper.
