What's my Towing Capacity?
The Mercedes GLA has an average towing capacity of around 2000KG, this impressive capacity will allow the driver to tow anything from a trailer tent up to a medium to large caravan. When deciding on what to tow it is extremely important to check the weight of what you are intending to tow as overloading the towbar can lead to not only damaging the towbar but also the towbar could unhitch and cause an accident. Which Towbar is best for my Mercedes GLA-Class?
There are three different styles of towbars available for the Mercedes GLA, a fixed flange towbar, a fixed swan neck towbar and a detachable swan neck towbar.
The fixed flange towbar is a permanent style of towbar that is the chunkiest style of bar, the fixed flange towbar is the only style of towbar that is fitted with a plate. This plate allows drivers to attach towing accessories to the towbar leaving the towball free for towing. The fixed flange towbar is compatible with all styles of cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. When towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser the fixed flange towbar would need to be fitted with an ALKO towball prior to towing.
The fixed swan neck towbar is another style of permanent towbar; however, the swan neck style towbar is much thinner than the flange towbar. The fixed swan neck towbars are the perfect choice for Mercedes GLA fitted with rear parking sensors, the thin design allows for a larger clearance between where the towbar sits and where the parking sensors are fitted allowing the parking sensors to work as intended. The fixed swan neck towbar is compatible with all camp-on style cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. It is also ALKO compatible meaning that the towbar can be used with caravans with an ALKO stabiliser without requiring an ALKO towball to be fitted.
The detachable swan neck is the only style of towbar where the towbar neck can be detached from the towbar housing. The neck is easily removed using a simple twist and push method, once the towbar neck has been removed the towbar electrics will flip underneath the bumper leaving the Mercedes GLA to return to its pre-towbar aesthetics. The detachable swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on-cycle carriers, trailers and caravans, it is also ALKO compatible and will not require an ALKO towball when towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser.
Will it need a bumper cut?
When fitting any of the towbars to the Mercedes GLA a visible bumper cut will be made to the bumper. Before the fitment begins our informative towbar engineers will discuss all modifications that will be made to the vehicle and answer any questions you may have regarding the installation.
