Checking your VIN Plate...

Please remember to check your vehicle's towing capacity shown on the VIN plate. If your car doesn't have a towing capacity, we cannot legally fit a Towbar to your vehicle. We recommend you do this before booking, as some vehicles vary throughout make and model (even though we may show some available).

What's my Towing Capacity?

The Mercedes Citan offers a healthy towing capacity of 2,100KG, this capacity will allow the driver to have choices when deciding on what they would like to tow. When deciding on your towing cargo it is always important to compare its weight with your vehicle's towing capacity as overloading your vehicle can lead to damage to your vehicle or even a road traffic accident if your towbar becomes unhitched.

Which Towbar is best for my Mercedes Citan Tourer?

There are three different towbars available for the Mercedes Citan, the fixed flange towbar, the fixed swan neck, and the detachable swan neck towbar. The fixed flange towbar is a permanent style of towbar meaning it is permanently attached to the chassis of the vehicle and cannot be removed upon completion of towing. The fixed flange towbar is the only style of towbar that is fitted with a rear backing plate that allows for towing accessories to be bolted onto the towbar, therefore, leaving the tow ball free to tow. The fixed flange towbar is compatible with all styles of cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans, however, if you are towing a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser an ALKO tow ball will need to be fitted before towing.

The fixed swan neck towbar is another permanent style of towbar, the main difference between the fixed swan neck and the fixed flange towbar is the design of the bar. The fixed swan neck is a much thinner bar that provides a larger clearance between where the towbar sits and where the rear parking sensors are placed. The fixed swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on style cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. The fixed swan neck is ALKO compatible and therefore can be used with caravans with an ALKO stabiliser without fitting an ALKO tow ball.

The detachable swan neck towbar is the only style of towbar where the neck can detach from the tow bar housing leaving the towbar to return to its pre-towbar state. The towbar neck easily detaches using a twist-and-lock method, we have a very helpful video on our website that shows you how to reset the towbar neck correctly. The detachable swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. It is also ALKO compatible and can hitch up to an ALKO stabiliser without any requirement for an ALKO tow ball.

Will it need a bumper cut?

When fitting any of the three towbars to the Mercedes Citan a small non-visible bumper cut would be made to the vehicle’s undertray. If your Citan has been modified, then this could mean a larger alteration could be made to the bumper. Our talented towbar engineer will guide you through the fitment process and discuss any modifications that will be made during the installation. If you have any questions regarding the fitment, please contact our office on 01947 895230.
