Which Towbar is best for my vehicle?
We have all options available to you. We have fixed or detachable options depending on what you may be towing and how aesthetically pleasing you would like the Towbar to look. We highly recommend the detachable swan neck Towbar for this vehicle as you can remove it when you’re not towing and as the vehicle has a non-visible bumper cut which means you shouldn’t be able to see a Towbar fitted at all.
With the fixed flange and the fixed swan neck options, we cannot guarantee these won’t set any parking sensors off. The majority of the C4 Space Tourer’s parking sensors recognise the fixed swan neck towbar and will beep when reversing, thinking there is something else in the way.
What’s my Towing Capacity?
The maximum towing capacity for the Space Tourer is 1750kg; however, we always recommend you look at your VIN Plate for the exact amount as they are vehicle specific. The VIN Place is usually located near the tyre pressures on the driver’s or passenger’s doorpost in a sticker format. Will it need a bumper cut?
Unfortunately, this vehicle does require a bumper cut however it is a non-visible cut which is perfect for a detachable towbar as you can’t see that a towbar is fitted to your vehicle.
Which Electric Socket for my vehicle?
There are 3 electric socket options used in the. UK; Single 7 Pin electrics (12N), Twin 7 Pin electrics (12N & 12S), and 13 Pin electrics.
The 7 Pin option provides power from the Towbar to the lights on a trailer or caravan. If you’re only going to be towing a trailer, this is all you need. You can tow a caravan using only single electrics, but the interior functions of the caravan, such as the fridge, wouldn’t have power to them. You will need an adaptor if your caravan has 13 pin electrics.
13 Pin Electrics have been standard in most other European countries for some time. This is replacing the two separate sockets (Twin) currently used in the UK. The 13-pin socket is essentially the two 7 pin sockets merged into one. All caravans manufactured in the UK from 2008 are fitted with an ISO 13 pin connector as standard. This system uses one socket with 13 pins inside instead of the traditional two separate 7 pin sockets.
Universal or Dedicated Wiring?
There are two ways that towbar wiring can be installed on your car. It can be installed using either universal aftermarket wiring or using what is known as vehicle-specific or dedicated wiring.
Universal Wiring is a lower cost option than vehicle specific towbar wiring; however, it does have some compromises. Universal towbar wiring provides all the lighting functions needed to keep you legal while towing your trailer or caravan. However, it doesn’t provide the additional benefits provided by vehicle specific towbar wiring.
Vehicle-specific wiring, sometimes known as ‘dedicated wiring looms’ or ‘plugin kits’, is becoming ever more popular for towbar wiring installation. To put it simply, this is the way the job should be done. Each kit is designed specifically for the vehicle that it is fitted to. Rather than soldering or using ‘Scotch Locks’ to connect the towbar wiring, which is the case with universal aftermarket wiring, these kits interface with the vehicle systems in the same way as the vehicle manufacturer intended.
