Checking your VIN Plate...

Please remember to check your vehicle's towing capacity shown on the VIN plate. If your car doesn't have a towing capacity, we cannot legally fit a Towbar to your vehicle. We recommend you do this before booking, as some vehicles vary throughout make and model (even though we may show some available).

What’s the Towing Capacity of The BMW 2 Series?

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has an approximate towing capacity of between 1,300KG to 1,500KG. This weight would allow the driver to tow anything from a small trailer up to a medium-sized caravan, however, it is extremely important to check the weight of your towing choice as overloading the towbar could lead to damage to your vehicle. All vehicles are equipped with a VIN plate that states the vehicle's individual towing weight and is usually located underneath the vehicle's bonnet or the passenger’s door sill.

Which Towbar is best for my BMW 2 Series?

There are three different styles of towbars available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, a fixed flange towbar, a fixed swan neck towbar and the detachable swan neck towbar.

The fixed flange towbar is a permanent style of towbar that is attached to the vehicle’s chassis, this style of towbar is chunky in its design and is the only style of towbar that is fitted with a plate on it. The plate allows the towbar to have towing accessories bolted onto the plate leaving the towball free to tow. The fixed flange towbar is the only style of towbar that bolt-on cycle carriers can bolt on to. The fixed flange towbar is compatible with all styles of cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans, although if you are towing a caravan with an ALKO chassis, an ALKO towball would need to be fitted before towing.

The fixed swan neck towbar is another permanent towbar, this means that the towbar cannot be removed after towing, if the towbar is removed from the vehicle this automatically invalidates its manufactures warranty. The fixed swan neck is a much thinner towbar compared to the fixed flange towbar and allows for a lot more clearance between where the towbar is fitted and where the rear parking sensors are placed. The fixed swan neck towbar is a popular choice with drivers of BMW 2 Gran Coupes that are fitted with rear parking sensors. The fixed swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on style cycle carriers, trailers and caravans. It is also ALKO compatible and will not require an ALKO towball when towing a caravan with an ALKO chassis.

Finally, the detachable swan neck is the only removable style of towbar. The detachable swan neck towbar allows the towbar neck to be detached from the towbar housing using an easy twist and push method. Once the towbar neck has been detached it will allow the 2 Series Gran Coupe to return to its original pre-towbar state. The detachable swan neck towbar is compatible with all clamp-on style cycle carriers, trailers, and caravans. Again, it is also ALKO compatible and can tow a caravan with an ALKO stabiliser without requiring an ALKO towball.

Will it need a bumper cut?

When fitting the fixed swan neck and the fixed flange towbar there is no need to remove the vehicle's bumper or make any modifications to the bumper, unless the bumper isn't the standard bumper. The detachable towbar would require the bumper to be removed during fitment, this will be refitted upon completion of the installation. The detachable swan neck towbar would also require a small non-visible bumper cut to be made to the vehicle's undertray, this would only be noticeable if you were looking underneath the vehicle. If your BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been modified this could lead to a larger incision being made, our informative towbar engineer will discuss all alterations at the beginning of the towbar installation.
