Towbar Mounted Cycle Carriers are a safe and secure way of carrying up to 4 cycles on the back of your car. Some bike racks are bolt-on carriers which means they only fit on flange style towbars, however the clamp-on cycle carriers will fit on both flange and swan neck towbars.

Towbar and Bike racks are often purchased together to ensure the correct towbar is purchased. When you purchase the two together out fitters will assemble and fit the cycle carrier at the same time as fitting the towbar and show you how they work.

Towbar mounted cycle carriers are much stronger and more secure than carriers that strap to the tailgate of your car, any risk of damage to your car is virtually eliminated. There are two types of Towbar bike racks available; stand-on carriers and hang-on carriers. Both connect to the towball and allow up to 4 cycles to be carried.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of towbar do I need for a bike rack?

Depending on your vehicle there are a few tow bar options you can choose from. Fixed towbars, detachable towbars, and the style of towbar; flange or swan neck. If you have already purchased a bike rack, then you need to know whether it is a bolt-on rack or a clamp-on rack. If your bike rack is a stand-on rack then you can choose either the flange towbar or the swan neck towbar.

What’s the difference between bolt-on and clamp-on carrier?

It’s the way it is fixed to the towball itself. If you have a Bolt-on cycle carrier then you will need a Flange style tow bar. The Cycle rack will bolt around and onto the tow ball. If you have a clamp-on carrier then you can choose either a flange or swan neck towbar as the cycle carrier will sit on top of the ball and usually push a lever arm down to clamp it on.

Will my bike rack carry my heavy e-bike?

As e-bikes are becoming more and more popular, so are the towbar mounted cycle carriers. We have a range of bike racks which will carry the heavier bikes and we also have loading ramps, so you don’t have to lift them onto the rack; instead, just roll them up! Our customers know when they purchase both the towbar and bike rack together our engineers will take that extra time to show you how they work.

What’s the best way to transport my bike?

Obviously, we are going to say a towbar-mounted cycle carrier, however independent studies have proven this is the safest and best way to transport bikes. Either a hang-on carrier or a stand on carrier fitted to the towbar is the best way to transport them. We have both options available and dependant on use, depends on which type you require.

Can any bike rack fit any car?

If your vehicle has a towing capacity and we can fit a towbar to your vehicle then there aren’t too many reasons why a bike rack won’t fit. If you speak to our customer service team, they will advise the best solutions for your vehicle.

Will a bike rack damage my car?

No. When attaching the bike rack to the towbar, there is usually plenty of clearance, so you don’t bump into the bumper of the car. We also have Spare Wheel Adapters for some of our carriers, so you don’t need to remove the spare wheel on the back of the car. The cycle racks we offer all tilt forward, so you can open your boot with the rack and bikes loaded.
