Ball and Pin Towballs

19 April 2022

If you are looking to tow a plant trailer or utilise a tow rope, you will likely require a pin and ball accessory. This replaces the standard towball of a fixed flange towbar.

As its name suggests, the ball and pin towballs are a combination of a towball and pin, with the pin sitting behind the towball and travelling through a recess below the ball called a ‘jaw’. This jaw and pin design allow plant trailers and tow ropes to be connected safely to the towbar.

Ball and Pin towballs can be fitted to every vehicle, however you will need to check your towing capacity to ensure you keep within the capacity of your vehicle.

There are 2-bolt and 4-bolt ball and pin options; 2-bolt D value is 21kN and 4-bolt D value is 31kN.

The D value determines the gross weight combination of the towing vehicle and trailer that can be used together.

D value = 9.81 x (T x C)/(T + C)

Example: 9.81 x (3.5 x 3.5)/(3.5 + 3.5) = 17.167kN

For a vehicle weighing 3.5t towing a trailer weighing 3.5t.

T = Towing vehicle weight (GVW)

C = Trailer weight

9.81 = Gravity

Most vehicles can have the 2-bolt ball and pin fitted, however if you do require the 4-bolt ball and pin, we will need to check the capacity of your car, and also check the towbar we are fitting, has been made to fit the larger bolt sizes on the 4-bolt ball and pin accessory.
